Tamil Cultural Histories
8 November 2022 - 7 May 2023
“Of Love and War: Tamil Cultural Histories” seeks to encapsulate various aspects and highlights of Tamil cultural history, covering an extended period from the ancient classical ‘Sangam’ age to Tamil culture and identity in the 21st century global stage. It will introduce paradigms that run through the centuries defining the identities, social movements, everyday life, patterns of thought, artistic creativity, tradition and innovation in the lives of Tamils in India, Sri Lanka and the global Diaspora. The latter dispersed over much of the world since the beginning of the civil war in Sri Lanka, with large populations now living in Germany and other European countries. With this focus, the exhibition aims to present a holistic perspective on an ancient civilization that, while constantly evolving and changing, has a strong sense of cultural continuity.
The exhibition is jointly curated by Dr. M. D. Muthukumaraswamy, National Folklore Support Centre, Chennai, and the Linden-Museum’s South and Southeast Asia specialist Dr. Georg Noack in cooperation with well-known scholars of Tamil language, history, and culture from institutions in India and Germany.
