From November 27, 2005 to September 17, 2006 the Linden-Museum in Stuttgart is presenting an exhibition of children's toys. Under the patronage of UNICEF the exhibition comprises toys and games from Africa, Asia and South America. Over 300 of them come from the
unique collection belonging to the Austrian ethnologist, Dr Fritz Trupp; others come from our own collections.
The toys are constructed out of everyday materials by
children. The creativity shown is remarkable: vehicles
out of wire, wood and plastics, dolls, imitation
headphones, wooden machine guns; each has something to
say about the worldview of its little maker. Dreams,
longings and fears are reflected in this creation
process, the home environments of the children often
being devastated by war, ecological degradation, or
struggling to cope with the arrival and development of
mass tourism.
The exhibition presents the numerous toys within the
context of their construction, allowing the visitor to
understand what lies behind the existence of these
simple things. There will be opportunities to play
with some of the toys. Complementing the exhibition is
an entertainment programme and a children's workshop
where younger visitors can experiment with toy making.
The special exhibition "Child's Play" is generously sponsored by the Artur Fischer TiP GmbH & Co. KG, Spieth Gymnastics, the Ravensburger AG, the S-Plus Umwelt-Service and the OBI-DIY Superstore Stuttgart-Feuerbach.
