The exhibition cooperation with the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung starts with the actual living situation of Muslims in Baden-Württemberg. The historic, social and religious background of the Muslims, which are formative for Muslims and the society in which they live now, will be pointed out. The focus is on the people and their social surroundings.
The exhibition was already shown slightly modified in Karlsruhe, Lörrach and Ulm. In the end as the top act it is conceived for Stuttgart as it is the capital of Baden-Württemberg.
The Linden-Museum Stuttgart as a modern institution for exhibitions and educational purpose sensitizes for the dynamics of intercultural processes, by communicating in a vivid and inspiring way cultural identities and living worlds. Therefore the museum is extremely suitable for illustrating the topics of "... more than simply guests”. By combining this present-orientated special exhibition of the Landeszentrale with the permanent exhibition “Islamic Orient – Approach to a World Culture” of the Linden-Museum the visitor can gain a much deeper understanding for the Islamic world and also for “Muslims among us”.
Moreover the Linden-Museum Stuttgart develops together with the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung and municipal institutions a wide ranged programme of activities and events, which is conceived to contribute effectively to the intercultural dialogue in this region.
AIMS
The target group of this exhibition covers a wide range of the population, especially school classes and adolescents should be appealed. The exhibition is meant for people with all kind of religious background and tries to take a neutral position. Religious stereotypes will be discussed objectively. This does not mean that conflicts are excluded. Problems will be named openly and a fair discussion should be encouraged. The exhibition is not designed to communicate “theoretical book knowledge” but is conceived to reach the younger and older audience in an exciting and vivid manner. There are no quick answers or solutions available but impulses should be given to reflect the topic or even to get involved with the intercultural dialogue.
BACKGROUND
Baden Württemberg has about 10.5 million residents, 12 % foreign immigrants; more than
a quarter of them is Turkish. The great majority is Muslim together with some converted Germans, some Bosnians and other immigrants from Muslim regions. The Islamic religious group in Germany includes more than 3 million people and is the second largest religious community in Germany. Citizens as well as local authorities are confronted with the fact that people live among them who are on the one hand part of their world and on the other hand are part of their ancestor’s world and traditions. Above all it means for children with migration background who live here in the third or fourth generation a balancing act between the two social systems which are compatible in some way but are not at all congruent.
No doubt, the integration processes which have already been started must be continued and enforced. But integration is only successful as a mutual movement when both sides are willing to accept, to adapt and to argue. Topics like “headscarf verdict” “teaching Islam in schools”, “building of mosques” or “kosher butchering” reveal the conflicts. Not very seldom it shows how less one knows about the Muslim neighbour. Ignorance makes people insecure and prejudices result out of it. The Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Baden-Württemberg therefore has the aim to pick up current and socially relevant topics and to provide a discussion forum for political and cultural discussions.
The terror strikes of September 11th 2001 and others as well as the war in Iraq demonstrate very intensely that the striving for information, integration and a peaceful cooperation must be continued. A lot of inquiries from schools and other interested people show that there is a great lack of information and point out the great significance of the topic “Islam”.
With this exhibition the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung picks up the current situation in Germany and also in international politics. The aim is to encourage the people of this country to interfere actively and courageously into the process of understanding.
